Kinney, J. (2016). Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Double Down. New
York, NY: Harry N. Abrams; ana edition.
Book 11, Greg Heffley is great at playing video games. His mom is continuously trying to get him to try different things especially now that she goes to school. He even joins the school band, which he finds out he hates playing the French Horn.
When he finds an old video camera in his basement, he wants
to prove to his mom that he’s good at something else. Greg and Rowley, his best friend, set a plan
in motion to make a scary movie, but like usual makes a mess and gets in
trouble. The ordeal was caught by a news
camera crew who get Rowley to attend interviews and talk shows without as one
word of Greg. Along the way Greg gets into a lot of trouble and get grounded a
whole lot.
This fun adolescence fiction read can be enjoyed by
elementary and middle school students. Its
illustrations are all over the pages that make you laugh out loud and beg you
to keep reading. I love the part of him
sitting on the toilet. I’m sure this
graphic novel gets kids to crack up as much as I did.
Greg is home alone a lot because his mom is going to school
and as a result he gets into a lot of trouble.
A lot of kids relate to Greg in that they too get into a lot of trouble
when left home alone. Even though
parents have consequences for kids, they will push the limits to see what they
can actually get away with. Typical of kids especially middle school, they all
want to fit in and be invited to the next big popular party as does Greg. He even joins the band, because he thinks he
will get invited that way, later to find out that she only invited part of the
band. He doesn’t give up though, and
wears a two people costume to get in with Rowley, true besties! (That’s until one of them has to go to the
bathroom.) I would have done exactly
what Susan did, helped make the costume for the boys. This book is one from the Quick Picks list.
